UF Sports Analytics Laboratory and AthlyticZ Announce Student-Analyst Training Partnership

Partnership expands year-round technical training and strengthens experiential learning for student analysts supporting 14 of UF's 21 varsity programs.

— The University of Florida Sports Analytics Laboratory (UFSAL) and AthlyticZ today announced a partnership to expand year-round technical training for the lab's student analysts. The agreement provides lab seats under a single institutional license, giving analysts access to live instruction and recorded resources that complement their applied work supporting Gators athletics.

Connecting training with real-world application

UFSAL's experiential-learning model brings together students from multiple academic disciplines to work in small teams supporting 14 of UF's 21 varsity programs. Students contribute complementary strengths in quantitative analysis, computing and sport management while addressing questions from coaches and staff. Their work provides opportunities to develop technical skills, communicate findings, and turn analysis into usable tools and insights.

The AthlyticZ partnership builds on the lab's existing mentoring and project work by connecting technical training with opportunities for direct application. Students can bring methods learned in live sessions into their team projects, strengthening their capabilities across the analytics workflow, from statistical modeling to application development and deployment.

The workflow analysts train across question to decision

Students train across every stage, not only the modeling step.

Student analysts receive access to a continuing program of more than ten live sessions each month taught by practitioners and academics. Topics include hierarchical and Bayesian modeling, application development in R and Python, large language model workflows, and containerized deployment. Sessions are recorded, and accompanying code is available to attendees, allowing students to revisit material as their projects and learning needs evolve.

“Experiential learning is central to our Lab, where students develop their skills by working on real questions for Gators teams. This partnership complements that experience with technical training they can apply directly to their projects, helping them turn analysis into tools and insights that coaches and staff can use.”

Director, UF Sports Analytics Lab

What the license covers

The institutional agreement is structured around the lab as a unit rather than individual seats, so analysts can be added through the academic year without renegotiation.

  • 01Full course catalog for every student in the lab under one agreement.
  • 02More than ten live sessions each month across modeling, application development, sports analytics, LLMs and productionizing.
  • 03Browser-based coding environments provisioned per student, with no local installation required.
  • 04Recordings and source code from every session, available from the session page.
  • 05Digital credentials through Credly for completed work.
  • 06Learning paths mapped to roles currently open across professional and collegiate sport.
“Florida is doing the thing most programs only describe. Their students are embedded with coaching staffs, producing work those staffs actually decide on. What the lab asked us for was not a course. It was a standing program their analysts could stay on all year, so that an analyst who joins in January learns the same way one who joined in September did.”

Licenses, workshops and consulting

AthlyticZ offers institutional licenses to university laboratories, athletic departments and academic programs. Alongside the platform, the company runs custom consulting and private workshops: standing up a new analytics group, auditing and rebuilding an existing one, training a coaching or performance staff, and building specific tools with a department rather than for it. Engagements are scoped to the group and range from a single workshop to ongoing advisory.

Instruction and consulting are delivered by practitioners drawn from professional front offices across several leagues, university faculty and research groups, and open-source developers who maintain tools used widely in the field. Institutions interested in a license, a workshop or a consulting engagement can or contact AthlyticZ directly.

About the UF Sports Analytics Laboratory

Founded in March 2025 within the University of Florida College of Health & Human Performance, the UF Sports Analytics Laboratory combines research, technology and applied analytics to support athletic performance, strategic decision-making and student learning across Gators athletics. The lab supports 14 of UF's 21 varsity programs and engages undergraduate, master's and doctoral student-analysts from disciplines including computer science, economics, industrial and systems engineering, information systems, sport management and statistics. Since opening it has delivered more than 100 models and custom reports to Gators programs. The laboratory is directed by Dr. Scott Nestler.

About AthlyticZ

AthlyticZ is a training platform for applied statistics, data science and artificial intelligence in sport. Members receive a full course catalog running in browser-based coding environments, together with more than ten live sessions each month taught by practitioners and academics across five areas: modeling, application development, sports analytics, large language models and productionizing. Every session is recorded, all code is downloadable, and completed work is credentialed through Credly.

Beyond the platform, AthlyticZ provides custom consulting and private workshops for organizations building or expanding an analytics function — standing up a new department, rebuilding an existing one, training coaching and performance staff, and developing tools alongside in-house teams. Instructors and consultants are drawn from professional front offices across multiple leagues, university faculty and research groups, and open-source developers whose tools are used throughout the field. AthlyticZ serves university laboratories, athletic departments, professional clubs, agencies and training academies.

AthlyticZ was founded by Michael S. Czahor, PhD, who spent seven years in Major League Baseball front offices with the Philadelphia Phillies, Detroit Tigers and Miami Marlins.
