Who this is for

  • Analysts comfortable in R or Python who want to build rating and ranking systems that hold up in practice.

Not for you if

  • You want the math theory without building anything
  • You've never written code in R or Python
  • You need a finished library, not to understand how it works
  • You want a single-sport tutorial rather than transferable methods

Session by session

  • Wed Oct 713:30–15:30 ETSession 1. Session 1 · Foundations: Elo from scratch — expected scores, the K-factor, updating; an Elo system built from scratch on real game data.
  • Wed Oct 1413:30–15:30 ETSession 2. Session 2 · Beyond Elo: Glicko and uncertainty — rating deviation, Glicko and Glicko-2, tracking confidence; a Glicko system that quantifies uncertainty.
  • Wed Oct 2113:30–15:30 ETSession 3. Session 3 · Evaluation and calibration — calibration, log-loss and Brier, backtesting on held-out games; a harness that scores competing systems.
  • Wed Oct 2813:30–15:30 ETSession 4. Session 4 · In practice: rankings that hold up — strength of schedule, margin, home advantage; a full pipeline and a defensible published ranking.

Subject: Approval request — AthlyticZ workshop: Rating and Ranking Systems in Practice

Hi [Manager],

I'd like to enroll in "Rating and Ranking Systems in Practice," a live 4-session workshop from AthlyticZ (Oct 7, Oct 14, Oct 21, Oct 28) led by Maddy Brown. Over four sessions you'll build and evaluate the rating systems behind real sports rankings — Elo, Glicko, and beyond — on real game data. It is directly relevant to my work, and I'll finish with a concrete deliverable I can bring back to the team.

It includes live instruction, lifetime replays, and a provisioned enterprise Posit workspace. Could this come out of our learning and development budget? I'm happy to forward the receipt and a certificate of completion.

Thanks,
[Your name]
